In the center of Essen, Germany, Nordrhein-Westfalen, exists a huge plaza which is called 'Kennedyplatz' in memorial to the killed president of the United States John F. Kennedy.
The plaza has been created after WWII.
The plaza was first called 'Gildeplatz' but after the killing of John F. Kennedy it was re-named to 'Kennedyplatz' in memorial to him.
In 1952 a new big building at the plaza was opend: The so-called 'Amerika-Haus'. It had been created by plans of the architect Hermann Gehrung. With its lending library, lectures and exhibitions, it was used to make the German people familiar with the American culture and lifestyle.
You can find an information board at the plaza which indicates the history of the plaza and the background of its name.
