The idea of ??creation of the Port Salines born in 1989
the willingness to relocate economic activity
traditional and formerly very important on the island:
Culture salt. To date , there are over salt marsh
operated on the island of Oléron , techniques and know-how
of salt smugglers are threatened. The salt marshes are
effect gradually abandoned in the course of
19th and 20th century and converted into clear oyster .
The Municipality of Le Grand- Village -Plage and the General Council of Charente -Maritime
carry this project. In 1990 , work to rehabilitate the site begins. Of Guerande salt smugglers are
approached to contribute their technical advice for the proper functioning of the hydraulic network.
At this salt marsh, is added to the project to create a museum , a salt cellar , docks , harbor
and shacks that will facilitate culturally and touristically the site of Port des Salines .
In 1994, the Port Salines is officially opened , it received its first
saulnier visitors and has its first tonnes of white gold. An interpretive trail , built
by the General Council of Charente- Maritime, complete the site in 1996 , inviting visitors to read
and understand the landscape environment they observe along the pedestrian path . this
same year , the site is within the network of " Poles -Nature " label granted by the General Council.
In 2006 , management of the Port Salines is transferred to the town
Island of Oléron, newly competent in the cultural field .
The objectives of this project to create a salt marsh were ambitious relocate
economic and know -how in decline since the 60s activity and enhance awareness
public to the salt production activity, its history, its gestures contribute to the preservation of landscapes from
the hands of men who are the specificity and identity of Marennes Oléron and contribute
biodiversity of wildlife and local flora.
Today , it seems that this bet is successful : other salt smugglers have settled on the island and
Port Salines welcomes over 20,000 visitors annually.

A site where the salt multifaceted
Combining the heart of a natural setting museum , saltmarsh and colorful huts
on stilts, the Port Salines is a site where the salt multifaceted , with
an essentially educational purpose .
The site is labeled " Pole Nature " by the General Council of
Charente -Maritime. Through a quality charter different binder
signatory partners ( communities, associations and the General Council )
labeled sites are committed to the protection of nature, the qualification
facilitators, the educational value of visits and amplitude periods
opening .
The museum takes visitors from hut to hut in the fabulous world of
salt . It invites the public to discover how a salt marsh , the steps
salt harvesting , use and trade that they were made from the island of Oleron .
The collections consist of tools used for maintenance of the marsh harvest and
transport of salt , ancient as well as an interactive model postcards. a film
presents the history of salt production , the creation of the site and the different seasons of the marsh and
Labour saulnier .
An educational journey punctuated questions allows young people to explore
the museum and its collections in a playful way . A documentary space composed of works for
all public and a playground for children , "The Goose Marsh" , invites young and old to
extend the tour by reading and play
The tour allows you to discover , size ,
operation of a salt marsh , observe gestures
the ancestral saulnier and enjoy this white gold to us
so vital . A tasting of local products (oysters, Pineau ,
samphire , caramels fleur de sel ... ) is possible at the end of
visit by appointment for groups.
In July and August , thanks to the " appointment with the
saulnier " roll up your sleeves and harvest practice
salt , with the advice of saulnier Port Salines .
Everyone leaves with a little salt memory ...
A boat trip can contemplate the
playful way , the landscape of marshes, their fauna and flora
very rich and diverse .
On site , visitors can also find
walking routes open access to the attic salt,
huts producers and craftsmen , a restaurant and
a farmers' market on Wednesday .
