The history of this church dates back to the 5th century when a wooden church was built, maybe on the foundation wall of a abandoned Roman building. A first stone church of the 8th or 9th century was replaced by a newer building around 1000, and in the 12th century a church in Romanesque style was built but stayed unfinished. Finally the earthquake of 1356 demolished substantial parts of the church.
After 1359 the church was repaired and completed. In 1420 it was enclosed with a seven meters high curtain wall with battlements and two gate towers to serve the residents of the village as a refuge in times of danger, since the old castles on the nearby Wartenberg were also partially destroyed in the earthquake.
The charnel chapel was built in the 2nd half of the 15th century at the inside of the southern wall. It is a two storey building with a lateral external staircase to the upper floor. In 1513 the building was provided with paintings on the facade and the interior; they were painted over after the Reformation and were rediscovered during renovation work in the 20th century.
There is no information about the active use period of the ossuary, the cemetery within the walls was repealed and relocated in 1860.
In the 19th century, the demolition of the walls and outbuildings was decided, but the commitment of active citizens could preserve this monument.

Die Geschichte der Kirche reicht ins 5. Jahrhundert zurück als eine Holzkirche erbaut wurde, möglicherweise auf den Grundmauern eines verlassenen römischen Gebäudes. Ein festes Gebäude entstand dann im 8. oder 9. Jahrhundert und wurde um 1000 ersetzt. Im 12. Jahrhundert wurde ein Neubau im romanischen Stil begonnen, aber nie ganz vollendet. Das Erdbeben von Basel 1356 zerstörte grosse Teile dieser Kirche.
Ab 1359 wurde die Kirche repariert und vollendet. 1420 wurde sie mit sieben Metern hohen Ringmauern mit Zinnen und zwei Tortürmen umschlossen, um den Bewohnern des Dorfes als Schutz in Notzeiten zu dienen, da die alten Fluchtburgen auf dem nahegelegenen Wartenberg ebenfalls zerstört waren.
Das Beinhaus wurde in der 2. Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts an der südlichen Innenseite der Schutzmauern erbaut. Es ist ein zweistöckiges Gebäude mit einer seitlichen Aussentreppe ins Obergeschoss. 1513 wurde das Beinhaus an der Fassade und im Innern mit Malereien versehen, die nach der Reformation übermalt und erst im 20. Jahrhundert bei Renovationsarbeiten wiederentdeckt wurden.
Über die Nutzungsdauer des Beinhauses gibt es keine Informationen, der Friedhof innerhalb der Mauern wurde 1860 aufgehoben und verlegt.
Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde der Abbruch der Mauern und Nebengebäude beschlossen, aber der Einsatz von aktiven Bürgern konnte dieses Denkmal erhalten.
