The local history museum of the district Dorneck-Thierstein is located in the former Roman-Catholic church St. Mauritius in the center of Dornach. "Schwarzbubenland" (Black Boys Land) is an inofficial, but widely-used name for the district, the origin of the name is unclear.

The history of the museum started in the 1940s. In 1938 a new, larger Roman-Catholic church was built and the old one in the village center was abandoned. The church probably dates back to the early Middle Ages, it was first documented in 1301; the choir is from the 15th century and the nave was extended and rebuilt in 1784. In the 1940's it was converted into a history museum; the inauguration was on June 11th 1949.

The museum exhibits archeological finds and relics from all over the district, many religious objects like old altars, statues and church bells, collections of historic agricultural equipment, models and documentations of medieval castles in the area as well as several collections of natural history and a documentation of the Battle of Dornach in 1499.

Inside the church there is also the grave of the famous mathematician and philosopher Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis. He had never visited this town, but when he died in Basel in 1759, he wished to be buried in the closest Roman-Catholic soil, and this happened to be Dornach.

The museum is open on Sundays 15:00-17:00 from Easter to end of October.
