This was the focus of a Peace Project carried out by Kirkbymoorside Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, and their leaders, working together with different groups and individuals from within the local community, including the local Anglican, Methodist and Roman Catholic churches and the Quakers; Kirkbymoorside Brownies and Rainbows; the library; Kirkbymoorside In Bloom; and Kirkbymoorside Environment Group. The pole is made from a Yorkshire gatepost donated and shaped by Duncombe Sawmill in Helmsley; the paint was donated by the Home Decorating Centre in the town; and every scout, aged 6 to adult worked on the stencilling.

Alongside English, the other languages were chosen for the following reasons:

German - Kirkbymoorside is twinned with Himmighausen; and the approaching centenary of the 1st World War.
Japanese - we have focused on the story of Sadako and the 1,000 cranes and are currently making 1,000 origami cranes to send to the Children's Memorial in Hiroshima; some scouts are currently learning Japanese as a hobby; the World Scout Jamboree in 2015 is to be held in Japan.
Yorkshire - the "translation" was provided by local dialect expert Adam Collier, who has also given a talk to Cubs about the Yorkshire dialect.
French - chosen by the Beavers (aged 6-8) - because it is somewhere nice to go on holiday, with good food - something that wouldn't be possible if we didn't enjoy peaceful relations.
Polish - chosen by the Cubs (aged 8-10.5) - because some of the Cubs are at school with Polish children who have moved to the UK and don't always find it easy to communicate and make friends.
Arabic - chosen by the Scouts (aged 10.5-14) - because of the conflict in recent years in the Middle East and currently in Syria.
Latin - chosen by All Saints' Parochial Church Council(who gave permission for the peace pole to be planted in the Millennium Garden next to the church) as a unifying language of the ancient western world.
Languages: Arabic, English, French, German, Japanese, Latin, Polish, Yorkshire
