Metcalf Gap is located on the US 180 near the intersection with the State Highway 16. A small sign on the US 180 marks Metcalf Gap, a well-known route through the Palo Pinto Mountains. The gap is named for J. J. Metcalf, who surveyed it as he was working his way west, having previously surveyed the site for the town of Palo Pinto.
