The Falls are 1708 m wide and drop 99m at its highest point, making it the largest sheet of falling water in the world when the Zambezi river is at its fullest. Their visual and scenic impact and their natural setting is also impressive, only to be matched with Iguacu/Iguazu in Brazil/Argentina. The Falls end in a series of narrow gorges.
David Livingstone, the Scottish missionary and explorer, is believed to have been the first European to view Victoria Falls on 16 November 1855 from what is now known as Livingstone Island, one of two land masses in the middle of the river, immediately upstream from the falls on the Zambian side. Livingstone named his discovery in honour of Queen Victoria, but the indigenous name, Mosi-oa-Tunya—"the smoke that thunders"—continues in common usage as well.
Mosi-oa-Tunya / Victoria Falls was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1989.
The coordinates were taken on the Zimbabwe side at the Main Falls
