The nature-sanctuary Herzogenmatt was created in 1978/79 in the wetlands in a forest west of Binningen. The main initiator of this project was Peter Rentsch, municipal councillor in Binningen 1968-1988. He was also president of the foundation board for the sanctuary from 1978 to 1984.
When he died in 2010, a Scots fir was dedicated to him at a hiking path in the area.
