Oregon City seems like a strange place to be haunted. Yet according to locals, the McLoughlin House in Oregon City, Oregon, is one of the most haunted places in the country.

Dr. John McLoughlin was the founder of Oregon City. McLoughlin originally moved west as an employee of the Hudson Bay Company. After spending some time in Ft. Vancouver, he grew to love the area. He was known for his kindness and generosity, especially when it concerned settlers. He was eventually fired by the Hudson Bay Company after frequently giving away supplies to settlers who needed luck. After that he bought the land that would later become Oregon City.
In 1829 the man carefully divided the city into a series of plots, and gave away all 300 to those he felt needed them. Those early settlers included people who came west looking for more opportunities and found nothing but hardship. He was later elected Mayor of the town, and served on the City Council. McLoughlin was known for having a poor relationship with members of the local Protestant Church. They felt that he was too showy with his money, and they also disapproved of his Catholic viewpoints.
The home he once owned is now open to the public as The McLoughlin House, and this is where some believe he lingers today. A former curator of the house was working late at night when someone gently touched her shoulder. She turned around to discover that no one was there. Not long after people began seeing a shadowy figure moving down the hallway and into the bedroom where McLoughlin once slept. Others have heard odd noises such as footsteps upstairs, when the building was empty.
Then there's the smell of tobacco that sometimes wafts through the house. McLoughlin was known as a lover of tobacco, yet the entire building and property is smoke free. There have also been some who claimed to hear a voice asking for help when they were the only ones there. The McLoughlin House also has unexplained activity that occurs in one bedroom. Some museum workers have found the covers pulled back and the pillow moved, as if someone had slept there the night before. Oddly enough, this is a child's bedroom.
It is worth noting that the McLoughlin House does not stand in its original location. The building was moved in 1909 to save it from demolishment. Perhaps the ghostly child is one connected to its new location instead of one connected to the house itself.
The McLoughlin House is open to the public five days a week, from Wednesday-Sunday.
