Natural Bridge Caverns is the largest commercial cavern in Texas. Discovered on March 27, 1960 by four college-aged cavers, the cavern system is currently mapped at 2.5 miles. Both state and federal official told the landowner that the cavern should be opened to the public, however, neither agency had the funds to do so at the time. The landowner, Clara Wuest (Heidemann), obtained the funds to develop the cave on her own. Work started in 1963 and was completed in 1964.
The tour through the Discovery Passages is for a fee and includes one of the largest underground chambers in Texas. The Hall of the Mountain Kings is larger than a football field, and the ceiling height is just at 100 feet in places. The tour passes through other large rooms and by other large formations. Other tours include the Illuminations Tour, The Lantern Tour and off-trail Adventure Tours.
