The State Theatre Košice (Štátné divadlo Košice), one of the most valuable buildings of the Košice centre, is the main live stage theatre of Košice region and also one of the most important theatres in Slovakia.
The State Theatre Košice comprises three independent ensembles: drama, opera and ballet, and performs on two stages: the Historic Building (which is theome of this waymark) and the Little Stage.
Historic building of Košice State Theatre, built 1897-1899, is an important cultural monument and landmark of the Košice' historic centre. The building, marked as manifestations of ecumenism, is valuable not only for its remarkable beauty, but also because the initiative to build it came from the will of culture loving citizens of the city. This brought it not only to life, but also forced its adequate central location and selection of qualified architect.
Adolf Lang - author of the theatre, is denoted by history as one of the most talented European architects of 19th century. The building of the State Theatre is his masterpiece. Its perfection gives the impression that it was literally dreamed up by this gifted artist. The
theatre is built in the style of eclecticism with elements of Neo-Baroque and Art Nouveau. It deserves to be considered an architectural jewel which is recognized and admired by experts throughout Europe. The exterior of the theatre is the pride of the Košice and the interior provides the visitors with the atmosphere of warmth, splendour and luxury.
