The route traverses the Drakensberg (mountains) between the towns of Sabie and Lydenburg in Mpumalanga province, through spectacular scenery. Long Tom Pass is a mountain pass in Mpumalanga province, South Africa, and is named for the Long Tom cannons that had been used here during the Anglo-Boer Wars. The original settlers who traveled the pass in wagon trains found the area to be very treacherous with steep grades, hairpin curves and hair raising cliffs. This was the original route the pioneers used for transporting goods between Lyndeburg and Mozambique. One portion of the road is called Devil’s Knuckles, a descriptive name referring to the rocky, steep road where many wagons were lost. The pioneers also faced dangerous animals and swarms of disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Today it is a popular route for marathon races, and for scenic drives. The Lowveld, endless rolling hills, eucalyptus and pine tree plantations and the gorgeous peaks of Mount Anderson and Mauchsberg combine to provide a very photogenic location.
