Gothic Sigismund Tower (Žigmundova veža), north steeple of the St. Elisabeth Cathedral, is not only the key element of Košice skyline and part of city principal landmark, but also one of the most beautiful church' steeples in Europe.
Unusual and really richly decorated Sigismund Tower, northern and the main cathedral's steeple, was built in 1420–1440. The tower, 60 m high and with 160 stairs, was reconstructed several times during its rich and long history. Tower was finally covered by decorative Rococo helmet from 1775. In the first storey is clockwork, in the second is structure for bells mounting and finally, in the third are two bells cast in 1926 (five original bells were melted for military use during WWI). The tower is accessible for visitors and its gallery offers a magnificent vista over Košice.
Monumental Gothic Cathedral of St. Elisabeth (Dóm Sv. Alžbety), a landmark of East-Slovakian metropolis Košice, is the biggest church in Slovakia and the easternmost Gothic cathedral in Europe.
