The building was refurbished in 2012 to a design by a local graphic design company called Crush. The centre then won a Bronze Award in the ‘Visitor Information Provider of the Year’ category at the prestigious VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2012 Ceremony.

The building has a distinctive design with large black glass walls, steep sided slate roofs and stands on small sandstone walls. The top of the building has a lantern with glass sides to let light inside the building. Four of the glass walls are used as display panels with information about 4 famous local people.

Gordon Banks - A soccer goalkeeper who played for England when they won the World Cup in 1966.

Lady Baden Powell - Wife of the founder of the scouting movement who became Chief Guide in 1930.

George Stephenson - early railway engineer known as 'Father of the Railways'.

Bess of Hardwick - a notable figure of 16th century Elizabethan English society.
