Like the show The Simpsons, some things in life just can't be fully explained, such as the meaning of this statue which is located on St. George's Mall (also called the Fan Walk) in Cape Town.
This public sculpture was the winnner of a 1998 a public sculpture competition for the city of Cape Town. It was unveiled on Friday, 26 May 2000 at 1 pm in St George’s Mall where it intersects with Waterkant Street. It is 3 meters tall and was created by Brett Murray, (born 1961 in Pretoria) who earned a Masters degree in Fine Art from Michaelis School of Fine Art, and whose work is on display worldwide and can be found in numerous public and corporate art collections. The walk starts off at St Georges Mall, so make sure to examine what local talent Brett Murray has put together. Simply titled Africa, this bronze sculpture with Bart Simpson heads has been both hailed and critiqued. Some were duly offended and saw the mixing of traditional African art with an American pop culture icon as tasteless. Personally I hope he makes another one with Homer."
