Josef Straka (* 14.6.1904 in Melník; † 29.6.1976 in Litomerice) was a leading Czechoslovak rower. He competed at two Summer Olympic Games. In Amsterdam 1928 he reached the Quarter-Finals in Men's Single Sculls and in Berlin 1936 he reached the Semi-Finals in Men's Double Sculls with his partner Vladimír Vaina. He competed nine European Championships, was winner of a raft of the most prestigious European competitions and seventeen times the champion of the Republic in all types of boat.
Josef Straka was Member of the Melník Club of Rowers, for whom in the building’s historic cellar’s he built a pool with training machine for winter training.
This memorial plaque, a work of MgA. Jan Brabec, was unveiled on 10th of July 2004 on Josef Straka’s birthplace and family home 5. kvetna 140, close to the famous late-Gothic tower of the Pražská brána (Prague' Gate).
