J.B. Duke had in his employ James Bonsack, who developed the automatic cigarette rolling machine. This machine which could roll as many cigarettes in minute as an experienced human roller could in one hour. Taking advantage of his technological advantage Duke kept lowering the price of his cigarettes forcing his competitors to do the same and eventually was able to merge over 250 companies into the the American Tobacco Company family.

American Tobacco Company became was one of the 12 original companies that made up the Dow Jones Industrial Average.By 1911 the company was forced to break into smaller companies due to the anti-monopoly as a result of the Anti-Trust Act on the same day Standard Oil was ordered to break into smaller companies.

Four firms were created by this breakup: American Tobacco Company, R. J. Reynolds, Liggett & Myers, and Lorillard.

Today the factory no longer manufactures cigarettes. It has been converted to housing, restaurants and other entertainment facilities. The Lucky Strike iconic smokestack and water still stands.
