We were fortunate enough to have a guided tour thru part of Kirstenbosch, and our guide confirmed this thatch is made of reed, and not only that, but our guide led us over to some of the live reed plants so we can see how they grow. Our guide advised that the roofs can be expected to last 60-80 years (but the insurance premiums are very high!)
