Simon's Town is located on the eastern side of the Cape Peninsula, in South Africa. It has been an important Naval Base since 1806, when the Naval Base moved to Simon's Town, during the second British occupation of the Cape. In 1957 the Naval Base became the property of the South African Government.
The village was first called Simon's Vlek, in honor of the Dutch Governor Simon van der Stel, who had governed the Cape Colony between 1677 and 1699.
The Visitor's Center can provide tourists with information about South Africa, as well as Simon's Town. You can pick up a Simon's Town walking tour brochure, compliments of the Simon's Town historical society, and learn about the village's architectural attractions, natural beauty, Cape history and legends (including the story of the able seaman Just Nuisance, the only dog ever to be enlisted in the Royal Navy. A statue honoring him is not far from the visitors center!)
