The Flying Dutchman Funicular (also known as the Cape Point Funicular) is believed to be the only commercial funicular of its type operating in Africa. It was named for the 17th-century ghost ship by the name of Flying Dutchman that is a local legend.
The rail line runs between two stations, from the visitors center at the lower parking lot, up to the visitor center/museum near the Cape of Good Hope Lighthouse. The trip by funicular is about 3 minutes, saving visitors the bother of walking the steep trail and stairs. There are 2 cars on the funicular, connected on a loop so that when one is going up the hill, the other is counterbalancing and coming down. The funicular received a R$3million renovation and upgrade which was completed just in time for the 2010 World FIFA Cup games which was held in South Africa and brought many tourists to the country.
