In 1932, the peoples of Japan presented a stone lantern to the City of Cape Town in appreciation of the hospitality and kindness given to Japanese sailors and immigrants during the prior era. The lantern was moved to storage during World War II and placed back on display once peace was announced.
In 2009, in conjunction with the Fifa World Cup events, the Japanese Ambassador to South Africa, His Excellency Mr Toshiro Ozawa, initiated a year-long commemoration of the affiliation between South Africa and Japan. The Japanese lantern was rededicated on December 1, 2009, and a plaque was placed at the location in Cape Town where the offices of the first Honorary Consul of Japan, Julius Jeppe, had been located, during his tenure, which lasted from 1910-18.
The plaque near the lantern reads:
"This Stone Lantern
was presented to
Cape Town
by the
Government of Japan
as a token of appreciation
of the kindness and
hospitatliy shown to
Japanese Emigrants
erected August 1932"
