The South African National Art Gallery is the premier gallery in South Africa. It has a permanent display as well as rotating temporary display of artwork inside the museum. This sculpture is just outside the front steps of the museum and is titled Numinous Beast, and was sculpted by Bruce Arnott in 1978.

Arnott (born 1938 in Natal, South Africa) was a Professor in the Dept of Fine Artat Michaelis School of Fine Art, a Life Fellow of the University of Cape Town and holds BA and MA Fine Arts degrees from that University. He was formerly an Assistant Director at the South African National Gallery where this piece is displayed.

Arnott's works are on display all over South Africa including at the Johannesburg Art Gallery, The Citizen Gallery, and the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town.
