These are the original gardens of the Dutch East India Company which settled in the Cape Town area in 1652, to supply ships that traveled the spice trade route between Europe and the East Indies, via The Cape of Good Hope.

The Dutch East India Company originally created the garden in 1652 for the purpose of producing fresh fruit and vegetables to supply their ships that were sailing the spice trade route between the East Indies and Europe, via the Cape of Good Hope. While no longer used as a food plot, the garden contains important botanical specimens (with a printable walking tour guide available on the website below), as well as numerous statues, static artillery, fountains, heritage trees, museums and art galleries, a 1781 sundial, the oldest cultivated pear tree in South Africa, a 1842 well with hand pump, a memorial slave bell dating to 1855, a rose garden dating to 1929, a Japanese garden with a stone Japanese lantern donated by the Japanese ambassador in 1932, and more.
