This statue can be found on a family grave in the estern corner of the cemetery Hörnli in Riehen north of Basel. It is a grave for five members of a family buried between 1923 and 1966.
The statue depicts a man executing water rafting. Water rafting is a popular sport almost exclusively executed along the Swiss part of the river Rhine and its main tributaries with currently 41 clubs on competition level. The construction of the boats date back to Gallo-Roman times, they resemble the punts in England but are much larger and heavier. The boats are poled or oared by a standing man at each end of the boat.
The statue is slightly over life-size and shows the front man of the boat. While the posture of the man is more or less correct, the shape of the bow of the boat and the man's position is completely wrong; the artist was obviously not very familiar with this sport.
