Andrew Murray (9 May 1828 – 18 January 1917) was a South African writer, teacher, and Christian pastor.

Murray was born in Graaf Reinet, South Africa, the 2nd child of Andrew Murray Sr.(1794–1866), who had been sent from Scotland along with his wife Maria Susanna Stegmann, to South Africa as a Missionary for the Dutch Reformed Church.

Andrew and his brother John were sent to Aberdeen, Scotland for their educational training and they both obtained their master’s degrees in 1845, and then they continued on to University of Utrecht where they studied theology and were both ordained by the Hague Committee of the Dutch Reformed Church on May 9, 1848, after which they returned to the Cape of South Africa.

Andrew married Emma Rutherford in Cape Town in 1856 and they had 8 children, 4 boys, 4 girls. He began pastoring in churches across South Africa at the age of 20,and in 1889 became a founder of the South African General Mission , and later of the South East Africa General Mission (1894). Andrew Murray authored more than 240 books, including “Abide in Christ” and “Absolute Surrender”, (which were written in Dutch and translated to other languages) was an avid teacher and lecturer. He spoke at the the Keswick and Northfield Conventions in 1895, and was given an honorary doctorate by the universities of Aberdeen (1898) and Cape of Good Hope (1907). The Missionary work started by Andrew Murray was successful and spread to other African countries, so the name was updated to Africa Evangelical Fellowship in 1965.
