A single horizontal cylinder diesel engine. Two small flywheels, one on either side. There are two methods of starting it. Feed compressed air into cylinder to spin flywheels, switch over to diesel. If no compressed air, put an explosive charge in cylinder plug provided. And hope flywheels spin long enough to get diesel to fire.

At end of day, use engine cylinder momentum to fill compressed air tank, visible above.

Fitted with a ‘Patent Scarifier’, used on roads until the 1950s. The scarifier was used to tear up the old road surface so a new one could be laid.

Brass plate says 'Supplied by Arthur M Cole, Roxholme, Sleaford, England'.

History
Ruston & Hornsby resulted from the amalgamation of Ruston Proctor & Co. of Lincoln with Richard Hornsby of Grantham in 1918. Further evidence, in this later period, of association with other steam builders are the Aveling & Porter safety valves fitted to this roller.
