Built in 1894 at the instigation of Bishop Alexander Chinnery-Haldane, Bishop of Argyll and the Isles, Bishop's House on Iona was designed as a retreat house for clergy to give them a quiet and tranquil time out. It is situated close to Iona Abbey and looks out to the peaceful setting of the Sound of Iona. The beautiful Columba's Chapel is situated right in the heart of the house and the bedrooms are all on the first floor. The guest area is on the ground floor and consists of dining room, library and lounge.
Since the early days there has been an increase in the number of guests able to be stay, now up to 23 people can be accommodated in 8 twin and 7 single rooms. Since this is primarily a retreat house guests are asked to help with keeping their own rooms during their stay and helping to lay and clear away before and after meals. it is found that this time helping each other gives more of a sense of community within the house. St Columba's chapel is open all day and in summer the Eucharist is celebrated daily. All are welcome to attend this service.
It is also possible to stay on a self-catering basis over the winter months, a new way to enjoy being on Iona in a different season.
