Neptune is the god of the sea in Roman mythology, a brother of Jupiter and Pluto. He is analogous but not identical to the god Poseidon of Greek mythology. Neptune's wife was Amphitrite, daughter of Nereus and Doris.

He also rules over the splendid Baroque fountain located in central part of Masaryk' square in Jihlava. The fountain is called Neptune Fountain Neptunova kasna), where he is depicted as taming a big fish with his famous trident.
