Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church was first organized in 1871 by the Swedish Settlers who came to New Sweden in 1870. The congregation moved to the present location in 1877. Attached to the main church is Svea Hall. Svea Hall is used for congregational suppers, celebrations, and Sunday School.
During the annual Midsommar Festival in New Sweden, members of the church organize an ice cream booth with homemade ice cream. A Swedish Smorgasbord is offered in Svea Hall as well.
On July 20, 1997, the building was named to the US National Historic Register of Historic Places.
Unfortunately, the church made national news when arsenic was put in the coffee urn one Sunday morning in 2003. Many were sickened and one man died as a result.
