Once farmers harvested their grain crops, they often used equipment to grind the grain into useable products, such as flour or meal, using huge stones like this one. Some grist mill stones were produced from one large stone, while other grist mill stones were pieced together from separate stones. The grain was ground between two of these stones, which were usually turned by the power harnessed from a river.
