The Clackamas County Fair is held annually in Canby, Oregon, during the third week in August. The fair is a typical agricultural fair, featuring 4-H and FFA events, with lots of livestock (cows, pigs, goats, llamas,sheep), poultry, rabbits, Guinea pigs, a large vegetable/flower and landscape design display area. The large two-story main pavillion is the location of the display and contests of baked/canned goods, hobby hall (quilts, collections, photography, painting, drawing, sculpture and more). A Pioneer Village, Petting Farm, reptile zoo and other hand-on activities are popular with children at the fair. There are dozens if not a hundred vendors in booths, displaying their wares both indoors and out, including many food vendors. Amateurs compete in talent shows, and professional (or at least paid) performers are on stage daily. A Pro Rodeo draws a large exhibitor base as well as crowds in the stands. Other events that have been held during fair days are demolitian derbies, motorcycle exhibitions, one year the Budweiser Clydesdales gave an impressive performance, and this year (2013) the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile made an appearance!
HISTORY:
The Clackamas County Fair was first held in 1907, but at that time it was held in Gladstone Park (which was later renamed Seventh Day Adventist Campground). In 1909, the fair board purchased land in Canby from Aaron Wait, for $3,692.50. The tall Douglas fir trees that are located at the back of the fairgrounds have shaded fair-goers since the land was first purchased! The first buildings were a temporary grandstand, and a livestock barn, and a racetrack was graded for horse racing. By 1915, the original pavillion was in use, and photos of the fairgoers display men fashionably dressed in white suits, and women in long dresses and wide-brimmed hats, near the race track. The Browning Carnival provided a ferris wheel and games of chance. In 1924 the oroginal pavillion was replaced with a larger one, and the current grandstand was built as well as more livestock barns. In 1950, a Hollywood production company produced "Clackamas County On Parade", at the fairgrounds and using a cast of more than 300 county residents. The rodeo was added to the fair in 1958. The riding arean was built in 1962-64, and in 1968-69 the old 4-H kitchen was replaced with a newer one and named the Cloverleaf Kitchen. In 1977-78 the Main Pavillion was upgraded and remodeled, using a combination of a federal Economic Development Grant, donations and donated labor from the Clackamas County Homebuilders Association. Additional updates and improvesments are made each year.
