The habour of Sibenik is reachable from the seaside only through a channel of about 2.5 kilometers length formed by the two peninsulas infront of Sibenik. The habour and the city of Sibenik are naturally protected.
If you take the boat from Sibenik habour to the small islands you pass this channel. On one point you see two entrances to a tunnel formed like a U. I walked there to see what it is and made some photos of it.
I asked people what this structure was used for and they told me:
During the croatian war of independence 1991-95 and later this tunnel was used to control the ships traveling from the seaside to the habour of Sibenik. The narrow channel was closed by a lot of mines stretching a line from one side to the other exactly between the two tunnel entrances. So every ship for Sibenik hat to pass through the tunnel where it was easy and save to control it's load.
Der Hafen von Sibenik kann nur über einen 2,5 Kiloemter langen Kanal, welcher sich zwischen den beiden Sibenik vorgelagerten Halbinseln erstreckt, erreicht werden. Die Stadt und der Hafen geniesen quasi einen natürlichen Schutz.
Wenn man mit dem Boot von Sibenik zu den vorgelagerten Inseln fährt, entdeckt man auf der linken Seite im Fels zwei Tunnelöffnungen die offenbar ein U bilden. Ich wanderte dorthin um zu sehen was sich hier verbirgt und habe einige Fotos geschossen.
Als ich (vielleicht blauäugig) nach dem Zweck dieses Tunnels im Fels fragte, erhielt ich folgende Erklärung:
Während des Kroatischen Unabhängigkeitskrieges 1991-95 diente dieser Tunnel der Kontrolle des Schiffsverkehrs nach Sibenik.
Der enge Kanal eignete sich sehr gut um einen Minenvorhang zwischen den gegenüberliegenden Ufern, genau an der engsten Stelle zu platzieren. Die engste Stelle befindet sich exakt zwischen den beiden Tunneleingängen oder -einfahrten. So war es ein leichtes den Schiffsverkehr und seine Ladung zu kontrollieren.
