Karl Wainwright is a hotelier that dies and leaves his estate split amongst four staff. One of the four, Gregory Chambers, goes missing before Karl’s funeral. Gregory is a mushroom expert and also runs the Punch & Judy stall at the village fete. The Punch & Judy stall has had a habit of using controversial village gossip in the dialogue.

Whilst Gregory isn’t found, a severed hand belonging to Gregory is found. There are several suspects. Gregory’s wife, Suzannah, is a beneficiary of Karl’s will, as is Tristan Goodfellow, Suzannah’s lover. Karl’s daughter, Annie, is pregnant by Gregory. Gregory’s blood is found in Annie’s truck and Annie is found by a bonfire of Gregory’s clothes. Annie is arrested.

Tristan is taken ill after eating some poisonous mushrooms, the destroying angel, and is not expected to live. The husband of another beneficiary, Kenneth Gooders, is murdered when a wall cupboard falls on him. Someone, over the phone, had ordered the local builder to unscrew the cupboard. Finally, Suzannah is shot by Julia Gooders, thinking that Suzannah was an intruder. Again someone had phoned Julia and Suzannah to set up the killing.

Obviously Annie is not the murderer, and is released. Tristan, on his death bed, confesses to Barnaby about the killing of Gregory. Karl had written a new will leaving all his estate to Annie. Suzannah, Kenneth and Tristan knew that Gregory had a copy of the new will and decided to kill him. Tristan did the deed with an arrow and put the torso in the lake. The limbs he had incinerated in the hotel incinerator, but a hand must have escaped.

Gregory’s death having been explained, it remained for Barnaby to solve the other murders. Gregory’s role with the Punch and Judy show provided the clues to the killer. The show was owned by Evelyn Pope and is now run by her niece Clarice. Clarice had unwittingly helped Evelyn in the murders, by delivering threatening letters and the poisonous mushrooms. Evelyn had the impersonation skills from the Punch and Judy show to allow her to make the phone calls. Before Evelyn can be arrested she takes an overdose of pills and dies.
