Matasci winery was founded in 1921. In these days local wines were mainly produced for personal use of the winefarmers. Giuseppe Matasci was a pioneer in this area. With some winegrowers he organized collective sales investigated in potential markets and built up distribution channels. After he acted as a reseller in the beginning he soon started to buy grapes and produce his own wines to have control over the quality of the products.

Today Matasci is one of the largest and best-known producers of wine in the canton of Ticino. The company is still family owned; they cooperate with over 1200 winegrowers, who mainly cultivate Merlot grapes. Besides their own products they also sell a broad range of other wines from Switzerland, Italy, and France.

The headquarter of the company is opposite the railway station of Tenero. The site does not only contain the wine store and a large dedicated tasting room, but also a wine museum in the cellar and a company-owned art gallery called Matasci Arte.

The shop is open six day a week during normal business hours; tasting events, including a visit of the wine museum are each Tuesday afternoon, free of charge.
