The church was consecrated in 1673, and was then intended for the German-speaking population in Norrköping. Therefore, it is still often called the German church. The church is named after Queen Hedvig Eleonora in many ways supported the Church's inception.
When Russian troops in 1719 devastated Norrköping church was badly damaged but rebuilt. In 1800, parliament was held in Norrköping. Hedvigs church was then rebuilt to be used as Hall of State. 1860-61 was conducted extensive renovations. A vestry was built, the church got new benches, organ loft and organ.
The last renovation was completed in 1959, when 1600's facade was restored. Among the church's furnishings include pulpit of German origin, font formerly stood in Stegeborgs castle chapel and altarpiece depicting the risen Christ meeting with Doubting Thomas, painted by Pehr Hörberg in 1791.
The pulpit was brought probably from Germany in the 1720s. The font, made in 1608, was a gift from Stegeborg castle church.
