Alex Witten was the Great-Great Grandson of Thomas Witten who was one of the early pioneers of Tazewell County, Virginia. Thomas Witten settled in Tazewell County in about 1767 and in 1772 he built Crab Orchard Fort (also known as Fort Witten) to protect early settlers from Indian Attacks. Years later Thomas Witten's Great Grandson, also named Thomas built Witten's Mill in 1872, west of the present day Town of Tazewell. Thomas Witten’s son Alex, who is buried in the Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, Virginia, last operated Witten’s Mill. The grave of Alex Witten is marked by a millstone that was used at Witten's Mill for over 60-Years.
