During the summer and autumn of 1856 the first settlements were made in what is now Plymouth County. One of these settlements was on the Big Sioux River and the other a German colony in the floyd River Valley. To this latter settlement came Rev. Frederick Schreiber in 1859. He had heard of a German settlement north of Sioux City and while he was in SC he met John Schneider and with with him to the settlement at Melbourne where he remained for several weeks. The first service was held on July 5, 1859. The present church building was erected in 1874 and dedicated Oct. of that year.
In Sept of 1910 the church celebrated 50 years of service to the community with a jubilee.
