The Portas da Cidade (Gates to the City) are the historical entrance to the village of Ponta Delgada. These impressive arched gateways were built in 1783 and formed the entrance to the city from port and harbour onto Praça da Republica.
The gates consist of three round arches, made from the usual regional material - black volcanic rock - with white washed walls. They were dismantled within the modification of the place in 1948 and again erected here at the Praça de Gonçalo Velho in 1952.
