The first funicular train linking the Lower Town and the Upper town with a tradition two-carriage alternate travel system was built in 1887 to a project by engineer Alessandro Ferretti from Emilia Romagna, who operated the service until 1906 when it was taken over by AMFTE, now ATB. In 1917 it was decided to completely overhaul the funicular system to increase capacity and reduce service interruptions to a minimum. The original system was redesigned by the engineer Mr. Zanetti and built by Stigler Otis. It was turned into two lift systems on a gradient operated by separate winches. Between 1920 and 1921 the old carriages were replaced by a new version made by Stigler, and the two stations of Lower Bergamo and Upper Bergamo were modernised. Other work was necessary in 1954 and in 1963-1964 two new panoramic carriages were installed. The last restoration work was carried out in 1987, a century after the funicular first went into operation. In 2008 the system underwent a general overhaul with replacement of all the automated parts.

Characteristics: length of line: right 240 metres; left 234 metres; difference in height 85 metres (da from 271 to 356 metres); gradient: maximum 52%; two carriages with capacity for 50 passengers.
