Gidgegannup is 42km east of Perth on the Toodyay Road.
First recorded in 1852 by passing surveyors it was then called Hampstead Hills.In 1946 it was changed to Gidgegannup after the Gidgegannup Brook which is in the area.
Gidgegannup is an aboriginal word meaning "Place where spears are made"
