Frans Henrick Kockums inherited a bankrupt tobacco factory at the age of 23 in a time of recession in Sweden. He was such a successful entrepreneur that his companies became the largest employer in Malmo with a work force of 6000.

The grave marker is an obelisk, that stands at the edge of the grave yard at the side of Torgatan.

There is a website that holds biographies of famous Swedish people and markers at grave sites show the web address for the relevant person. In this case it is http://www.idstories.se/id/fhkockum/ and the details have been taken from that site. Page 2 on the web site also has photographs of his grave and a map showing the location in the Gamla Kirkogaden graveyard.

Frans Henrik Kockums 1802-1875 Entrepreneur is the word we use today to describe a person Frans Henrik Kockums Elder Although his father had tobacco and real estate, and his mother was the daughter of the great industrialist [Frans Suell] there was no bed of roses for Frans Henrik. When his father Lorens Kockums suddenly died in 1825 was the Malmö finansliv reeling. 1817 had been the town's only bank, Malmö discont, crashed. Even his father's estate was bankrupt, but Frans Henrik took over the running of the tobacco factory and did it with honor. It eventually became much money in profit that could be invested elsewhere. One of the projects was to start a foundry south of town. (It is now David Hall Square. Kockumsgatan and Verkstadsgatan reminiscent of perations.) It began with agricultural implements and stoves but soon came steam engines, railroad cars and boats to dominate. In the 1870s the area became too crowded and they made their way out to the harbor. Here came Kockums through one hundred years to dominate with their workshops and dolls. It was half a century Malmö's largest workplace with which most nearly 6,000 employees in 1960.
The large gantry crane is now gone but Kockums remain as submarine yards and is now owned along with Karlskronavarvet of HDW Group in Kiel. Francis Henry's tobacco factory was also a bright future. 1913 fought several large Swedish tobacco company merged to form the United Swedish Tobacco Factories. When the Swedish Tobacco Monopoly image Spirit 1915 Kockums at West Street in Malmo the only remaining plant in Skåne.
1,962 were built Frenchman Suell Tobacco Factory in Malmö harbor. Hit concentrated all production of cigars and cigarillos and large parts of cigarette production. Eventually, Volvo, by Swedish Match over and renamed it to the House of Blend and then sell cigarette production to Austria Tabak and koncenterera rest to other factories. Today, the factory empty. Francis Henry was also involved in a variety of other companies in Malmo, Kallinge, Ronneby, Ormo, Landskrona and Lomma. It was the sugar industry in collaboration with - [sugar kings Tranchell] in Landskrona, ironworks, ore fields, copper works, brickworks, shipping companies, steam mill, porcelain and match plant needs.
Everything was not gold but a lot has been left as viable businesses into our time. Frans Henrik Kockums Elder was a great man, not only in southern Sweden, but also in the Swedish industry."
