Union Mill/Prima Care Medical Center - Fall River, MA - Converted Factories on Waymarking.com

In Fall River, east of the center of town, is the Prima Medical Center, which occupies multi-story stone buildings that once was the Union Mill.

The complex, now known as the Durfee Union Mills (the Durfee Mills are adjacent to the Union Mills) is located in a plot of land bounded by Pleasant Street, Plymouth Avenue, and I-195. The entrance is off Pleasant Street.

There are two main buildings and a few supporting buildings. The main buildings form a T-shape. The taller buildings are six stories tall, while shorter buildings are a couple stories. These buildings have many windows, forming a grid. There are several entrances to these buildings. The main one for the medical center is on the west side of the rear building. Several signs for PrimaCare Medical Center are posted on the buildings.

Union Mills were the first steam powered mills in Fall River and produced textile cloth. The first building was built in 1859. In 1866, they were joined by the Durfee Mills to the east. Together, they helped make Fall River one of the largest textile cloth producers in the world. The operations stopped, however, in 1923. I can't find a time when the mills started to be used for other purposes. In 1983, the combined Durfee-Union Mills were listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Around 2004, the Union Mills were converted and occupied by the PrimaCare Medical Center. According to their web site, here they "provide primary care, specialty care and full diagnostic services (MRI, CT scans, nuclear cardiac testing, vascular testing, ultrasound, x-rays, etc.)."
