Between 1850-1900 great numbers of German immigrants traveled to America to start new lives. By the turn of the century nearly half of those living in the Midwest were from German background. This building, the “Germania House” was one of the first “Gast Haus” built in Davenport and the last immigrant hotel still in existence in the area. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 2004 the doors to the German American Heritage Center were opened to help “preserve and enrich for present and future generations knowledge of the German immigrant experience and its impact on the American Culture.” (website)
“The German Immigrant Experience” is an interactive permanent exhibit at the heritage center. This helps visitors explore what immigrants experienced when they arrived in the Midwest in the 1800’s. There are audiovisuals and two hotel rooms that have been restored.
Museum hours are: Tues.-Sat 10-4 and Sun. 12-4
