Niklaus Thut Fountain is located in the heart of the old town center of Zofingen at Niklaus Thut Square. The stone water trough is octagonal and has a painted pillar in the middle which the Statue of Niklaus Thut atop.
The painted stone statue depicts Niklaus Thut in life-size. He wears a contemporary suit of armor and has the banner of Zofingen and a buckler with the municipal coat of arms.
Niklaus Thut is the city-hero of Zofingen. He was the bailiff of the municipality. Troops from Zofingen fought in the Battle of Sempach in 1386 on the side of Habsburg. Thut and eleven other citizens of Zofingen fell. A story came up how he saved the town banner from the enemies in his death. There are no contemporary documents about this event, the earliest mention is from the 16th century.
