Duluth’s history book (see link below) tells that the “Minnesota Point Lighthouse was placed atop mile marker zero, set there by George Stuntz and used for all surveys mapping Lake Superior.”
Stuntz was the first white man to settle on the point and operated a trading post near the lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1858 by Adam Dopp, a German mason. It is constructed of red brick and was later whitewashed with limestone. Its original 50’ height has been compromised by the weathering over the years; and its lack of use has contributed to its demise. The ruins are on the National Register of Historic Places. There are no visible mile marker numbers, just the notes in the city’s historical journals.
