The lighthouse which marked the western coastal limit of Ponta dos Capelinhos was destroyed during the volcanic eruptions, lasting for 13 months, from September 27, 1957 until October 24, 1958. The Vulcão dos Capelinhos is a landmark on Faial, its ruined lighthouse (now used as lookout-tower) and the Visitors Center (Centro Interpretativo do Vulcão) are tourist destinations.
