Clarke City was the first industrialized in this area. It is where the Clarke brothers of Toronto erect their pulp mill. In 1901, they obtained the hydroelectric rights on the Sainte-Marguerite River and a forest concession of more than 2000 square kilometers. Between 1903 and 1908, they build a hydroelectric dam, a pulp mill, a town and a railway 12 kilometers long connecting the mill to the wharf that they built at Pointe-Noire. The train was of the North Shore Power Railway & Navigation Company (NSPR & N), an enterprise founded by the Clarke Brothers in1902. In 1914, NSPR & N becomes the Gulf Pulp and Paper Co., which was taken over by British interests in 1920.
This sculpture is a tribute to the workers of Clarke City. The town is now part of Sept-Iles, the mill was dismantled many years ago. This sector is now only residential, but thanks to the citizens who now live there, a monument to their past has been erected.
And a fitting tribute as well.
Sector of the workforce: Les travailleurs dans le pâte et papier. Pulp and paper mill workers.
