The John Nicholas Trail is one of many ways to enter the Sanborn/Skyline County Park. Entering from the Black Road trailhead you can take a nice gentle hike to the lake and back for a round trip total of approximately 3.8 miles.
While walking on the John Nicholas Trail, you will be walking amongst huge redwoods. Depending on the time of year, you may cross a creek and will most likely pass a couple of small waterfalls. After approximately 1.9 miles, you will come to a lake where we are told the fishing is pretty good. Fish, admire the view, or sit at the nearby picnic table and enjoy whatever snacks you have brought with you before you return from whence you came.
