In the village of Iggesund, 10 km S of Hudiksvall on the Swedish east coast, there is a rather well preserved ironworks with two blast furnaces, a Bessemer furnace and several smithies and hammers. The ironworks is open as a museum during summer. The furnaces were founded in 1684 and were operational until 1953. During the 20th century, the business shifted from iron to paper, today there is a large paper mill and cardboard factory in Iggesund.
There has never been any iron mines in the neighborhood of Iggesund, the reason for placing a furnace here was the stream which yielded power, and an abundance of forest, which yielded charcoal for running the furnace. The ore was shipped from various Swedish mines.
The museum is very interesting for children, but there are lots of steep stairs, so it is not suitable for elderly people, motion disabled or strollers. The lower parts of the furnaces are wheelcahair accessible.
