This Symbolic Oil Lamp, called a
NANIQ, is a gas-powered sculpture of a traditional Eskimo seal-oil lamp. The lamp with its ETERNAL FLAME, sits in the middle of Heritage Park, a circular park surrounded by benches.
The Heritage Park and Lamp were built in 1976 and are located between the Lola Tilly Commons and South Chandalar. It is more specifically 65 feet just south of the McIntosh Hall Dormitory.

EMILY IVANOFF BROWN, (Eskimo Name: Ticasuk) was a teacher and an author of many books dedicated to preserving native heritage through ancestral stories. Her accomplishments were recognized by Presidential Citation. Her name adorns many public buildings in the town of North Pole as well as other parts of Alaska.
